Started in 2012 by Anuya Jakatdar with friends Shalaka Pai, Phalguni Desai, and Neha Bhatia, Books on Toast is a book donation drive and sale in Mumbai. After a successful run last year—the project raised Rs. 60,000 for Hamara Footpath, an organisation that works towards providing education to street kids in Churchgate—Books on Toast is back and accepting donations for their sale next month.

Donation centres are spread out across the city at the following locations: Thane, Vakola, Mahim, Bhayandar, Chembur, Breach Candy, Bandra, Colaba, Cuffe Parade, Andheri, Ghatkopar, Dadar, and Oshiwara. If you’d like to donate books for the drive, send an email to booksontoast@gmail.com with the centre closest to you, and the Books on Toast team will be in touch with further instructions.

“Books on Toast is an initiative for book lovers, by book lovers,” says Anuya. “It was devised so that people could buy used books for free and clear out some space on their bookshelves. The charity angle is just some awesome icing on the cake.”

The final date for donations is May 5, and the sale will take place at Candies (Pali Naka, Bandra) on May 11 and 12 from 12 p.m. onwards. Proceeds from this year’s sale go to the Familia de Ouro project, in association with Lok Seva Sangam, for the benefit of slum children in Bainganwadi (in Govandi).
