What’s the Story, Morning Glory?
[Published in May 2012]

Helter Skelter was launched as an online magazine nearly two years ago. Since then, we have constantly received emails requesting us to publish fresh, new short fiction and poetry in addition to our regular features. With New Writing, we aim to do exactly that. This is a brand new space for emerging writers and poets in India.

For this, our first edition, we invited submissions based around a visual cue—a photograph depicting a telephone with its receiver off the hook. Writers were invited to use the theme as a starting point, an ending, or as the nucleus, as long as they ensured that the connection was clear. We were looking for original writing that would look beyond the obvious, and we received a lot of great entries that did just that.

It's been a lot of fun going through all the submissions we received and putting together this collection. We hope that you enjoy reading and sharing the poems, short stories, and illustrations that make up New Writing: Volume One.
